Your hands spend hours on the keyboard and mouse, and every awkward position repeats thousands of times a day. Here are five simple changes from the Workplace ergonomics for hand injuries program in Naeesh.
- Raise your screen so its top is at about eye level, so you don't bend your neck down.
- Bring the keyboard close to your body and tilt it slightly, so you don't reach for it.
- Keep your wrist straight and in line with your forearm, and move your fingers rather than your whole hand.
- Pick a comfortable mouse that sits close to you and clicks lightly. A vertical mouse keeps your forearm in a more neutral position.
- Rest your back against the backrest, and set the chair height so your legs are level and your feet are flat on the floor.
Naeesh has an interactive workstation checklist: tap each item to see where it applies on the diagram, and tick what's true for you.
Even the best posture doesn't replace movement. Take short stretch breaks regularly and avoid fast, repetitive movements.
